What do you do?

Beck Leadership provides a comprehensive and effective soft skills development program.

What inspired you to start your business?

After 30 years in education, working with learner of all ages, I discovered a common truth about how learners derive meaning from new ideas, content or materials. Leadership training and development programs could net a more successful ROI if they were offered in a more relevant and proven approach. I love teaching, learning, coaching, training and had a desire to start my own business.

What's special about your business?

Skills that are essential to both personal and professional success are introduced and reinforced in an unusual format that ensures changes in habits and behaviors...for life.

What have been the high and low points of being a business owner?

Beck Leadership courses were a face-to-face, highly interactive format. I graduated my second cohort on March 10th, 2020. Graduation ceremonies were definitely a "high". Trying to figure out how to create something virtually has been a bit of a challenge, but I believe it will turn out well.

What is your relationship with SCORE?
SCORE client
How SCORE helped.

Ben Fisco has been a continual reminder of the importance of the "bottom line". He offers ideas and suggestions that are within my ability, keeps me focused and accountable, and he offers encouragement when needed.

What's great about my mentor?

Ben Fisco and David Terrell have both been patient, prepared, positive role models who have challenged and encouraged me, as needed. It's clear that they have a vested interest in helping me succeed. They have been approachable, good listeners who are excellent at communicating what they know while honoring my autonomy and growth.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting a small business?

Be flexible, coachable and have a growth mindset; willing to learn from your mistakes. Be patient with the process. Communicate openly with your SCORE mentor and put their suggestions into action, or give them a reason why not. Mentees need to be enthusiastic and action oriented, having clear goals and a strong purpose, mission, vision or WHY. Take initiative and respect your mentor's time, being certain to apply good meeting etiquette. Come to each meeting prepared and ask quality, open-ended questions. Always be respectful by showing your appreciation for their time, expertise and caring.
